Virginia Hartman, M.A., LPC, CSAT
Ginnie holds professional designation of Licensed Professional Counselor, Certified Sex Addiction Therapist and Supervisor. Ginnie graduated from Western Michigan University with a BA in Education. She began her professional career as an elementary school teacher. After a brief time in the classroom, she returned to graduate school and obtained a MA in counseling psychology from Western Michigan University and became a Licensed Professional Counselor. Initially she planned to become a school counselor. However, her own history of growing-up in an alcoholic family and later marrying an alcoholic and sex addict drew her to the field of addiction. Ginnie believes that her own experience in Al-anon, COSA, and her years of healing from the wounds of growing-up in a dysfunctional family make her especially skilled at helping others who have been on a similar journey.
Ginnie began her practice in a local treatment center. After becoming certified as a substance abuse interventionist by Johnson Institute, she gained experience in intervention, aftercare, family treatment, and primary treatment. She moved to another local agency and then went to work for The Betty Ford Center where she worked in primary care and the family program.
Ginnie worked and studied with several leaders in the field of addiction. Sharon Wegschieder Cruse, Stephanie Covington, Claudia Black, and Pia Mellody have mentored, influenced, or encouraged her on her professional journey. She has done advanced training in psychodrama and EMDR. Eventually, Ginnie chose to go into private practice where she specialized in group work and women's issues. She trained with Patrick Carnes and began to use his Task approach. After obtaining certification in sex addiction treatment, she began treating individuals with sexual compulsivity and sexual anorexia. Her practice, The Healing Center, thrived in Michigan for many years. In 2005, Ginnie and Paul closed the Michigan practice. Currently they work together and individually specializing in workshops and intensives for individuals and couples.
Paul Hartman, M.S., LMFT, CSAT
Paul holds professional designations of Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Certified Sex Addiction Therapist, Supervisor, and Trainer. Paul graduated from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. He began his career with the Upjohn Company in pharmaceutical sales. He transitioned into financial planning specializing in working with physicians. He continued his education and earned a M.S. in finance. He continued his work in financial consulting specializing in working with family owned corporations.
Paul and Ginnie married while attending WMU. In 1977 Paul finally broke through denial and began his recovery from dual addictions to sex and alcohol. He also did intense therapy around the trauma of growing-up in a dysfunctional family. After several years of relapse free recovery, Paul began to plan for a career change. He sold his consulting business to one of the large, international brokerage companies and began graduate school. He graduated from Fuller Theological Seminary where he attended both the School of Theology and School of Psychology.
Post graduation, Paul had the opportunity to train with many of the nation’s top specialists including Sharon Wegscheider, Joe Cruse, Janet Woitiz, Pia Mellody, and Patrick Carnes. After earning his license in marriage and family therapy, Ginnie and Paul went into private practice together. They called their clinic The Healing Center. They specialized in treating addiction, co addiction, couples, and families. Their practice thrived, and they worked together until August 2005 when they closed the practice. They continue to work together and separately in a unique model based on workshops and intensives for the individual and couple.
